Accuracy at 100 yards

I have 2 24" barrel A/A Grendel A3 Overwatch and after 2 years using multiple types of powders and 5 different type bullets, I still can not get 1MOA at 100 yards.
The scope is mounted correctly and not loose. I have 6 other rifles will shoot 1MOA at 100 yards. All ammunition is hand loaded. I am an old soldier so I believe in having a clean barrel.
Suggestions are invited.

Been 4 years since above post. Since I am a persistent type person I kept trying different bullet/powder combinations - finally gave up. I am going to order a Faxon Match 20" barrel.

Sounds like a good time to discuss things with AA. Have your data, and make your case to them. Seems like you've given them a fair try. Two years out, don't know what to expect, but they should hear about your experience. I would!

Do they guarantee 1 MOA? If so I would contact them for suggestions.

some rifles shoot better when they are somewhat dirty. some swear by that. i don't know myself. but i usually do not clean all the time. but i am starting to clean more often.
my 16" aa barrel shoots under moa.

If I were in your shoes I’d try some factory Hornady A-Max or ELD-M. The factory Hornady ammo has proven accurate for me. I’d also get someone else who is a good shooter toshoot my rifles. By doing this I would eliminate me as the source of the problem. If the rifles still didn’t shoot I’d call AA.

Another thing to consider is your trigger up to the task of shooting MOA. I don’t shoot tight groups with a milspec single stage 6 pound trigger.

Give the barrel a break and don't clean it for a while. See what happens. All my rifles shoot much better with dirty bores. Some of them will go hundreds of rounds before they need to be cleaned......others drop off in accuracy in as few as a hundred or so. None of them shoot very well after cleaning......5 or 10 fouling shots put them back on track.

Stop cleaning it for 50 rounds or so and I bet your groups will tighten up.

Also what bullets and powders are you using? Brass? Primers? Just curious.

These AR's are not the most accurate of platforms to start with so there's every possibility it's just an average barrel and you are doing nothing wrong (except maybe the choice of barrel).

Is the barrel bedded into your receiver? Gas block bedded? Have you checked the barrel nut torque for correct specs? All might make the difference your dealing with.

1/4" groups huh? That must be one heck of a rifle........I've never seen a factory rifle shoot factory ammo that well.....not even a bolt action.

I've gotten multiple ragged 5 shot holes with Hornady American gunner, and Hornady Black out of a 18" PF upper, 24" Lilja barreled upper, and 4 Howa minis.

Lot of barrels out there do it, it's the operator that has the issue.

Lots of 1/4" barrels out there (on the internet)? Over the hundreds of rifles that I've shot and handloaded for I have never had one that would consistently shoot that well.....maybe a group here or there but never consistently.....and I've been in the accuracy game for quite a while too.....Never owned a full blown custom but have had enough great shooting factory or semi-factory rifles to know that a quarter-incher is very uncommon.

How many times have you seen pictures posted that showed just one group on the target?....Of course it's always the best one shown and the others never even get mentioned. I shoot at a club with some serious benchrest shooters with some top quality equipment....they aren't shooting many 1/4" groups either....not while I'm around anyway......And we're not talking about 3 shot groups here....no called flyers, no excuses, 5 shots minimum to be of any real indication.

Here's an example......when someone only selects one group to brag on, the smallest of course, the gun is automatically a hummer....forget about the rest of the groups.

It may not be a AR-15 platform, but I have a Ruger bolt action 6.5 that will shoot 1\4" groups (hand loads of course).

The object is to get group WITHOUT flyers I would rather my groups be consistent as in 1..25 in a tight cluster. Not 3 at ..25 another at 1.25 and the other at 2.o then call it a .75 group with without the flyer. Tells me I have work to do. My .02

We don't call them "Flyers" anymore with Grendels. They are "StoneHendge'd" shots.
