Grendel Mag Idea??
#1
I'm sure this was already discussed somewhere ..... but,

I was thinking about current problem with having only C-products mags available. I was wondering if the 6.8 mags or 7.62 x 39 mags work at all in a Grendel. If so, why not just replace the follower with a grendel follower?? Just a thought anyone have any experience or ideas here??

If there is a non-grendel magazine body that works well in the Grendel, is there anyone that even offers replacement followers??

Several guys have been using 6.8 mags in the Grendel for a long time, including the PRI mags that allow a longer COAL.

A slight high jack. But I thought AA was working on a drum mag for the Grendel. Similiar to those expensive, but effective 308 drums out there. I need one like a hole in my head. But I may have to get one just to have. Never know when the zombies are comming?!

AA is working with a couple manufacturers on mags, one includes a drum mag.

As LRRPF states, many people have done well with 6.8 mags. I intend on picking up a couple PRI mags and seeing how they work.

I would like a 30rd mag, like the Barrett 6.8 30rd mag. I think it's prudent to see how these quad column mags pan out operationally, since history does not favor the "coffin" mag design. It was banned from use on the front in the Winter War between Finland and Russia in 1939-1940, due to reliability issues in the Kp31 9mm SMG, which is extremely reliable with drums and stick mags. They used it in the role of an LMG more often than not, due to its accuracy and firepower with the drums.

The only difference I can tell between my C Prod 6.8 and 6.5 mags is the follower color and caliber lettering--the mag bodies appear identical.

The C Prod 7.62x39 30-roiund mags are markedly different from the C Prod 6.8/6.5 design. Not only is the follower a different shape and color, the mag body has a pronounced curve to handle the cartridge taper of the 7.62x39. The rib design is also quite different. The 10-round 7.62x39 mag body has the same rib pattern as my 14-round 6.5 mags, and although the follower is the same as the one in the 30-round mag, the 10-rounder runs 6.5 just fine.

not super relevant to this discussion, but if anyone needs something to get them by until their mag is shipped from somewhere, they feed fine in increments of 5 from 20 round pmags... I didn't try more because i had it out for deer and i didn't really feel like dinkin with it.

My intent here is to find a non-C products mag that will run Grendel that is more reliable. I'd like to be able to swap out the stock followers with Grendel followers. I'm just trying to find another manufacturer that has a reliable magazine that will allow the Grendel to feed.

Kind of robbing from Peter to pay Paul. But, if the outcome is a more reliable magazine then it's worth it. I'd hate to start buying all different kinds of mags just to see if they work for Grendel if they have already been tried by someone else. Basically I'm fishing for info.

I think I'll give the PRI mags a try.

I tried the PRI 6.8 waffle mags a few years ago and didn't have much luck. I tried them with both the 6.8 follower and a Grendel follower.

I could only get them to feed reliable with 5 or less in the magazine. YMMV.

Answers my question!! No need to spend $40 bucks to find that out!

Any other contenders?

Bummer, you can get that with a bog-stock 5.56 PMAG up to 10 or so rounds with many rifles.

Has anybody tried the Barrett mag with 6.5 Grendel?

Over on arfcom, Fortier said he could get only 10-11 rounds to go into a PRI mag. It makes sense that PRI mags are a no-go, since the internal dimensions were designed solely for 6.8 SPC, which has a smaller diameter case than 6.5 Grendel.

The Barrett 30-rd mag was also developed only for 6.8 SPC, so it's unlikely to be viable for use with 6.5 Grendel, either.

It looks like C-Products is the only game in town, for now.

I guess I will "NOT" be trying PRI mags ..... LOL. You'd think that the 7.62 x 39 mags would work since that brass was used to fire form for the Grendel.

Too much taper, thus the mags are more curved. "Rams Horns" the arabs call them.

This may piss ya'all off, but many years ago I owned a Colt AR in 7.62x39 which I could never get high capacity mags to work in. Fast forward to today....... It seems no manufacture can get an AR mag in 7.62x39, 6.5 G, or 5.45x39 in a high capacity mag to work in an AR. The aluminum frame of the AR precludes using AK factory mags (proven in all calibers). The mag well of the AR precludes the radical angle of the mags needed. Looks like we are stuck with the 5 - 20 rounders guys.

My 25 rounders for Grendel work fine. How much longer do you want to carry.
