Is 18" enough

I have a 18" barrel but am trying to get into a longer barrel to extract the most potential out of the Grendel. If I can't does the 18" barrel provide enough velocity to set the Grendel apart? I have a 6.8 for hunting under 250 but want the Grendel for longer shots. Will the 18" let the Grendel shine past 300 yds?

Read up on the ballistics and go from there based on your target species. Don't think it's a good idea for Moose at 600 yards, but I could be wrong. Once you've done the research, you'll probably park your 6.8 at the back of the closet. It's fine inside 300 yards, but the Grendel has longer legs!

With TSX's, the Grendel matches the 6.8 at 100yds for muzzle energy, and then starts to slightly edge it from thereon out, even starting 150fps slower at 2500fps. That is a 120gr 6.5 TSX (lightest they have) vs. a 110 TSX (heaviest they have for 6.8 that will mag-feed). Trajectories are almost identical out to 400yds, Grendel has slightly less wind drift...within 1.7" I think of each other.

I personally would have no reservation about making a 400yd shot with an 18" Grendel on game, after marrying the rifle to the point that I know my data and real-world POI in various wind conditions. Those ranges are so short, that there will be minimal dope to correct for.

Last year I killed a deer at 437 Yds... One shot kill
Had just done 400 and 500 Targets the week before and had a great front rest on the stand or I would not have taken the shot..
we went to the shop got the laser rangefinder .. drove back to the deer and lased the stand .. Thats how I know the distance exactly

Thanks guys that's what I was wondering about real world experience of hunting longer then 300yds with it. My only game right now will be whitetail and yotes. Itll be my open field/ bean field rifle. On a side not does anyone have experience with the AA mk10 handguards? What is the choices of length?

The AA Mk10 handguards are actually quite awesome. After handling Bill Waites' AA 28" with that handguard, I really took a liking to it straight away.

I'm sure the handguards are designed for the longer barrels to shave weight, but I think and a mid length it be pretty nice. Are the mid length handguards 9"s?
