Statistics dont support gun control

I also suspect there are other societal factors that have contributed to the decline in crime, not just gun ownership.
Video games and higher potency marijuana are what I think need more looking into. Youths without any adult supervision had to leave the house to look for trouble in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. The trend in crime dipping left its high in the late 80s/early 90s, and started going way down right before the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. Nintendo released Super Mario Bros in February of 1990. It takes a while for the FBI to compile their national crime data from all the States. I figure 3 years of Super Mario Brothers plus smoking lots of dope kept tens of thousands of otherwise delinquent youth and repeat offender dirtbags on the couch at the house, rather than out on the street looking for trouble. 1992 was a huge year in very popular video game releases. I'm not a gamer BTW, just looking at this from the big picture. I think most criminals who are willing to do violence are too ignorant of the demographics of their region to really care much, although there was a report where many violent offenders were interviewed in prison as to how they evaluated targets before choosing a home to rob, person to assault, or jailer to attack. The findings were quite interesting. For example, many stated they would not rob a place if they knew people were armed and at home, and that they would prefer not to attack jailers who had better kept uniforms and were in shape. Most sociologists and criminologists attribute the spike in the 1980s to the rise of the cocaine industry. The question that nobody has been able to answer definitively is what caused the major drop in crime from 1993 to the present. While firearms sales did rise during that period due to population growth and the Clinton AWB, we must be careful of the correlation-causation assumption, as tempting as it is.

The increase of firearms in the population did not correlate to any increase in crime as the anti gun crowed would like us to believe. I never correlated the increase of couch potato gaming as a reason for the drop in crime but it does make one pause to consider. It could be the increase of entitlements and gaming which has dropped the need of committing crime to satisfying would be thugs contentment. Bread and circuses! Interesting.

Many sociologists and criminologists don't like to admit that locking criminals up reduces crime. Prison sentencing laws such as mandatory minimums and Three Strikes came about in the very late 80's and into the 90's, corresponding with the crime drop. In Oregon, Measure 11 (long mandatory sentences for violent felonies) took effect in 1994. Unfortunately, 20 years later we're seeing a movement to eliminate these laws. Even Obama is pushing for shorter sentences for "non-violent" drug offenders (because justice is systemicly racist, don't ya know). Be wary of any politician, sociologist or criminologist supportive of prison or sentencing 'reform'. They look to eliminate the very policy that has been at the heart of this decades long reduction in crime.

If they cloned Sheriff Joe Arpaio and had him run the prison system in Chicago/Crook County, repeat offenders would be dramatically reduced.
On one hand, you hear about how evil America is for putting people behind bars. Then on the other, we are criticized for not being tough enough on crime. In all the under-developed countries I've been to, police are lucky to make the equivalent of $200/month, so they take bribes for common crimes as a way of making a living out of necessity. As a result, most of the people who belong in jail are free to roam, which is why the US is hard to find even on a nationally-ranked crime list when you look at per-capita violence. What you will see are people picking raw numbers, not acknowledging that the US is the 3rd largest population in the world, with one of the least population densities. Once you look at per capita, you need to squint as you scroll through the list or you'll miss it. We're nowhere near the top. It's a very safe Nation to live in, where you have a fighting chance to protect yourself in or outside of your home.

Video coverage of some of police shootings have a common thread: the "victim" was taunting or actively threatening the officer.
One could speculate that our news media and national "leaders" have excited a feedback loop along the lines of broadcasting how poorly one or more groups are treated by law enforcement with carefully chosen examples to "prove" their case. This encourages younger citizens to taunt and confront officers. This leads to self defense responses, creating more examples for the media mill with no time twken to investigate what really happened untill after the mobs are incited. Making matters worse, some members of these historically disadvantaged communities engage in acts - petty theft, assault, robbery, etc. - that appear as part of normal crime statistics but are more motivated by the perception they are oppressed. They view themselves as heroes and the perception is reinforced by peer encouragement. This speculation could help explain why some communties seem more violent and crime-ridden than others. In these areas, being caught and convicted does not bring shame, but the community view more akin to how we view our POWs. This means that short sentences do not deter, but more likely encourage, behaviors we view as criminal. This behavior is not new but has been present for decades. This partly explains why police are viewed and act as occupying forces rather than members of the community. Keeping repeat offenders off the streets will be the only way to prevent the behaviors.

Presstitutes tell lies?
Most people wouldn't be surprised if they found out that a lot of "news" stories are paid for by government, or handed to mass media outlets as talking points from staffers in the WH and political campaigns.

My recollection of their position is that wide availability of guns enables gun violence, and that reducing/restricting/controlling access to guns would reduce shooting deaths and injuries. There is some evidence that they are right. Since the 1934 NFA was enacted, murders committed with machine guns seems to have plummeted from when there were no limitations on sale of machine guns to private citizens.

Um, perhaps I'm not remembering correctly, but I don't recall the anti-gun crowd ever saying that madmen or Islamic radicals are not a threat. Another example is the complete ban of firearms in federal prison. Firearm deaths is a non issue to inmates because of this ban resulting in a safe rehabilitating environment. Stan your logic is a wonder to behold.

I will now grow a pony tail with man bun and change my sartorial habits by wearing burcon stocks shoes and Che Guevara t-shirts. I'm in the process of scraping off my NRA bumper sticker and replacing it with a Hillary for president. I'm donating all of my money "that I didn't earn" to the Clinton foundation and will spend my time helping illegal "oops I mean undocumented "Muslin and other refugees get to this white privilege, racist country and receive their fair share. I now know we only need to look at all the other sensible countries that prohibit private ownership of firearms. What was I thinking???? If someone tries to violate my wife or daughter I'll teach them to wet themselves while I call the police or better yet, put a gun free sign on my front porch which will make my home criminal proof. Yes, federal prisons are a bastion of safety for the inmates since no firearms are allowed. Nobody ever gets harmed in prison. If we could only get our nation as safe as federal prisons. With Hillary"s help we may get there yet. Thank's again Stan for your logical insight. Remember to vote Hillary!
