New to the Forum - New AR

Greetings all! I am a new AR-15 owner, having just built my first one this weekend (with the help of a fine gunsmith). On his recommendation, I went with the 6.5 Grendel for this fine weapon, and I figured I'd share it with everyone.

I've been a pistol guy most of my adult life, so when I say I'm new, I'm REALLY new to this world. My other rifles are an AK-47 and a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 chambered in .40.

I'm rather excited about my new baby.

I'll see if I can spit out some of the technical details now.

It uses a custom built Controlled Chaos Arms lower.
AR-Stoner chrome barrel, 18", 1:8 twist.
AR-Stoner Heli-port muzzle brake
Les Baer Custom bolt carrier and key
Yankee Hill Mfg quad rail
Mag-Pul grip
Vltor adjustable stock

I think that's about it. My future plans:

Need a scope. Will probably do a 3x9 at first; maybe something a little bit more powerful, but not much more.

I want to put a forward grip on there. Perhaps pick up a bipod at some point.

Rail covers. A definite must with this quad rail.

Iron sights... still considering that.

Nice looking ar-15 I to am building my first ar-15. Working out the final details with Satern Custom Machine for a 18" Barrel I can hardly wait after seeing yours!!!! lol:

I can't tell you all of the "neato torpedo" things about the lower, because like I mentioned in my first post, I'm still learning. I'll see what I can scare up about it and post it here. I can tell you that they were custom built. Michael Ware - owner of CCA - had 25 of them built, and it was a nightmare for him. It took ATF over 6 months to get off their collective butts and issue the variance. After that, the manufacturer milled the first run incorrectly, and they had to be rebuilt. The lowers were $250 each. I'm not sure if he's going to do another run or not, but I'll find out and post that here along with the specs on the lowers themselves.

Here are some of the gee-whiz things about the lower:

• Swept magwell to aid in low light or blind mag changes
  
• Integral trigger guard - larger and one piece
  
• Mechanical, ambidextrous carrier release
  
• Captive rear take down pins
  

I'm told that if there is enough interest, he'll do another run. I've had a couple of guys at work mention that they could be interested, and to be honest, I'm considering building a second AR later this year. I think he should just put them up for sale on his site, and order them as folks want them. With the ATF variance already taken care of now, it would only take 2-3 weeks to mill, anodize, and send them out.

Then again, while the lower looks pretty bad-a$$ to me, you guys probably know more about it than I do.

It's not the best pic, but you get the idea. Over the past week, I've added a few things to my new addition. None are earth shaking or overly expensive, but they are a good start.

I added a UTG 4x16 scope, a Pro Mag forward grip, Pro Mag rail covers, and a Blackhawk Tactical sling. For the sling, I attached the rear end to a swivel stud mounted on the stock, and the front end to a swivel stud attached to the left side picatinny rail.

Need to get to the range now and get the scope set up. My wife says I've spent enough this month on the AR.

Congratulations, Sean! If that's your first AR build, you are well on the way to becoming a true AR-addict and Grendel junkie! Once you've got the glass mounted, you'll be warning others to leave your fired brass alone in no time!
