Took the grendel out to 1200 today at Thunder Valley!!!!!!!!

Well i took the training class at Thunder valley with Tom and he tought me to shoot out to 1200. Hitting targets out to 900 was no problem with a 7-10 mph cross wind. 1k to 1200 was a bit more tricky but easily doable. Most of the targets were 12x12 and some were 6x9 head cut-outs. lol

Also i was gettin 2620 ft/sec out of factory 123 a-max ammo out of a 24" tube.


Also took out my .223 gun and shot to 1k. i was getting 2900 ft/sec with wc844 and a 69 grain smk.

Thats sweet. How consistent were your hits at 1200? What was your zoom level?

The grendel was about 3/5 and the .223 was 2/5 at 1k. Well i have a 20x scope but was more consistant at 10x. The wind was the hardest part, the yardage was no problem. I ran out of scope travel at the 1200 mark even with a 22moa base. Tom said the cartrage with hand loads and more travel with hit 1500 on a good day.

yes thats the viper 6.5-20 that i got of the post here, The barrel is the aa 24" tube with the threads cut off and a 11* crown put on. I actually sent the scope back to vortex and am having the reticle changed to the bdc reticle for longer range. I ran out of adjustment with a 22moa riser right at 1170.

Yeah, the customer support from Vortex is pretty exceptional. For the money in that scope, it is a very capable piece of glass. If you're going to get bitten by the long-range bug, you might consider looking into NF for the full elevation travel you will need, because you also need windage travel when the erector tube inside is almost bottomed-out. Vortex also has the Razor HD with tons of elevation travel, but it's a 35mm tube, so you'd need different rings, but they sell them.

It appears that you have to strain a bit to get a proper eye-height to the scope. Would it help if you had a cheek riser to adjust to the natural eye height? If so, I can't recommend the Magpul PRS enough.

i have been thinking about the prs for a while. cost was a factor so i went with the one on there.
