First Grendel Deer

Glad to see the forum back! This is my first Grendel deer from the 2010 season. Shot the deer at 380 yds with my AA 24" Shilen barrel using 120gr Barnes TTSX.

He didn't drop in his tracks. Found him in a clearing about 35-40 yds from where I shot him. There's a long story behind it that doesn't completely sell me on the load we had worked up. Got a lot of testing to do with the 120 TTSX before season this year.

Try the 123 AMAX, you might not always get an exit wound but you won't need to track them down.

I was thinking about the 130 Accubond. I haven't shot any AMAX through the Grendel yet. Two seasons ago I had 140 AMAX loads worked up for my Creedmoor and lost a deer. 80 yd shot, deer lurched into the trees, and we spent 2 days looking for him. I never saw him again until two weeks after season when he stepped back out into the pasture. I've talked to a couple guys at Hornady and they were as baffled as I was. I have an AMAX load for all my big rifles. They are one of the most accurate bullets I have found, just a little leery of using them on deer again.

Try the 100 ttsx. I am getting a TON more velocity from the 100 grain ttsx. My guess is that you will be much more satisfied with the performance of the 100 grainer. I personally think that the 120 is fine for people shooting shorter distances, but I just don't think it can match the 100 grainer.

longdayjake - I've looked at your 100 TTSX thread a couple of times now and have been thinking I should probably try working up a load with these before I give up the TTSXs in my Grendel.

Like I said, I have gotten a HUGE difference in velocity between the 100 ttsx and the 120 ttsx. I know some guys have had success with the 120 but I think it is just too long and it goes too slow.

I'm working up some loads for the 120 TTSX myself for this Fall; what are you using or what do you plan to try this year?

mpstan - The 120 TTSX load I used was 30.2 gr BL-C(2), CCI #450, and Lapua cases with a C.O.L. of 2.235". Haven't chronographed these loads yet but they have been shooting VERY tight 5 shot groups at 100 yds through my gun. Not sure if I'll try to tweak this load more or maybe drop to the 100TTSXs this year after reading longdayjake's reply. I have a 130 Accubond load on order that I want to try out too.
