Hello all. I am a new member here and am just beginning my journey into the 6.5 Grendel build. I'm hoping to gain guidance in a few areas of my upcoming rifle build on which I have not yet settled. To begin, I'll describe what I'm building with and what the rifle is for.
I have inbound a Satern 22" Grendel II chamber. I plan to mate this to a standard forger upper that I have as a spare. I have multiple lowers that I could put this on but I've purchased a TAC enhanced poly lower(stripped) for this project for the weight savings. I have a VTAC 15" Alpha rail(also very light) that I intend to use.
This will be, primarily, a hunting rifle for deer sized game out to 400-450 yards I imagine and varmints at the same or farther. It will be fired from a stationary position, likely from a bipod, over open terrain. This is not a woods gun. I chose the 22" because I wanted the increased velocity gains over the shorter barrels and because I got a good deal through a group buy, in that order.
My questions for the horde are as follows:
1. With this set-up, is it better to use a carbine or rifle length buffer, reliability wise?
I have a spare carbine tube and would likely use a MFT Minimalist to cut weight if this length works well. But I can just as easily get something like an ACE in Rifle length. I do plan to cut weight where I can here.
2. What buffer weight should I use with #1?
3. Talk to me about gas blocks. Do I need an adjustable block or will standard work fine? I do not recall gas port size but it will be the .750 diameter. I may put a can on this from time to time. Will that make a difference?
