Hey shooters, i have everything in order for my rifle, and finished a bit under budget even. so i have a 400-600 dollar range for an optic. here in the next few weeks hopefully if i get my AA upper in time, i will be finished just as the land owner is done finishing his work so i can start going to my new private 700+ yard shooting area.
my bolt gun has a simple nikon buckmaster 3-9x40, with BDC. good deer scope, but i want to push my grendel out pretty far with my setup as i intended, could you please suggest a good scope in my range for 5-7 yards plus? i know it will be a budget scope so please dont hit me up with those 1200 dollar scopes as budget scopes lol.
i will get a higher end one later when skill calls for it, and when i do the budget scope will run on my bolt gun

For that price range,
Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50,
Viper PST 2.5-10x44,
SWFA SS 3-9x42 FFP,
SWFA SS 10x42 Side Focus,
SWFA SS 20x42.
All of these have 30mm tubes and strong, reliable gears that will not lose tracking, and are from $299-$600. If you go Vortex, call Scott at Liberty Optics for better than MSRP deals. The SS are only through SWFA I think. You will also need a quality mounting solution. Most of these scopes are variable magnification, while some of the SS's are fixed. Some offer Front Focal Plane, while only one has side focus. I find myself wanting side focus on scopes that don't have it, to help determine the best target picture while shooting. The Viper PST 2.5-10x44 has zero stop, excellent gears and click values, decent glass, but no side focus. It's a great scope for the money.
Any of these are great budget scopes with tough construction. Check out the video reviews on Sniper's Hide youtube channel.
I put a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 on my Grendel, paid $300. But after reading a lot of recommendations from others on this forum I'm looking real hard at the Vortex PST 2.5-10x44. It's heavier than the Leupold but the 30mm tube and bigger objective lens would be worth the extra weight. You might want something with more power if your shooting 700yrds. I built my Grendel for light weight deer rifle, under 300yds.

for that money get the Viper PST, we keep telling you guys this for a reason, buy once cry once.
You get the deal of a lifetime, is has an unlimited lifetime warranty and YES it is that damned good.
LRRPF52 has one, my friends have one, guys who buy their own stuff for deployments have them, what more do you need to know?
The scope is equal to some of the Nightforce offerings, the glass is nearly equal the options are better and the reliability if off the charts.
Operators I know have taken them and intentionally abused them, they just keep working.
What else can you say about that in life?
I have that millet scope. While it is a good scope I quickly decided I wanted something better. A friend once told me that I was to poor to buy low quality stuff. He was right. I spent money on that Millet and now will have to buy again to get something better. Buy once, cry once. No truer words (in the world of optics) have been spoken.

I would recommend avoiding the Millet scopes. Main reason: reliability...gears break, click values suck, glass is foggy/distorted often. I know a guy who has been working with different scope manufacturers for decades, trying to get his reticle design adopted by them. Millet finally was one of the only ones who did it for him, and all the scopes went Tango Uniform on deployment. They break quickly, in other words, which is the standard feature you will get from any product made in China, minus a few of the companies that institute US Quality Control on US machines with US oversight of the operations. Any money you have that is seriously being considered for a Millet should be reallocated for a quality, American-made mount. Do yourself a favor, if you're in that boat, and follow this advice.
Take money destined for Millet....commit it to a quality mount. Any questions? Trust me, I will not steer you wrong.

will probably go out and look at what i can locally and decide from there, thanks for the help, hoping to go look at the viper line of optics this evening.
A friend of mine made me an offer I couldn't refuse on my Viper 6.5-20x44 MilDot, but I still wish I hadn't sold it. If I were buying a Viper again, I would get the 6.5-20x50 MilDot. Great scopes for the money, not to be confused with the Viper PST's.
I have a Millett on my .223. It has been back to the repair station twice in its two year life. I would not recommend the brand. Every time you send it back you end up paying $20 back-forth shipping.
My next scope was a Sightron S3 6-24x50. It cost more but I have not found a single reason to complain about it.I have it on my Grendel. Range adjustments are perfect and the clarity is great. I would buy another one.
Almost everybody i have talked refers to a vortex viper first as the best scope for your money. I will be picking one up shortly and let you know how it goes. Though i have no doubt it will exceed my expectations.

There are a lot of go-to scope models missing from this guy's recommendations, especially USO and NightForce NXS series in his $2000 and below recommendations. If you want long-range optics and money is not an issue, look at Hensoldt 3-12x56 FFP Mildot for the best glass.
For features and top-end glass, look to Premier Reticles and Schmidt & Bender.
For customizeability and excellent glass, look to USO.
For reliability and excellent glass, as well as great features now with the addition of FFP/Zero-stop, look to NightForce.
I recently did a side-by-side of a NightForce NXS and a Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50. I have to say that the glass quality was really close, but the NF appeared to be slightly clearer to me. I compared them on same power settings, but I was limited to indoors inside the Sportman's Warehouse. The Razor HD has a 35mm tube, and tons of elevation adjustment for calibers that reach past 1000yds easily. I wish it had 56mm objective and at least 10 MRAD per elevation turn, versus 5 MRAD, but it has zero stop and huge target knobs with positive click values, and fiber-optic dial indicators.
For scopes under $1000, look at the Vortex Viper PST's. They simply have too many features and reliability that cost at least $1500 starting in other scope lines. The glass is not Zeiss, but it is clear throughout the field of view and works well under adverse weather conditions. I've heard good things about Sightrons, but have no experience with them.
I wish I could drop Hensoldt glass into a PST, but Hensoldt glass alone would probably cost $800 to $1200 just for the lenses, and is tightly-controlled. You gotta pay to play with world-class glass.

Can you take some pics of the reticle field of view of the March 2.5-25x42 and post them for us, on 2.5x, 10x, and 25x outside? I've used that scope with the bench rest reticle, and I was really impressed with the glass. I think I stayed on 2.5x inadvertently since I was able to resolve targets with no problem out to some pretty unbelievable distances. They have a good deal of respect in the bench rest community.
Meopta is also a reputable brand in the hunting scope lines.
