AR Stoner Barrels

Does anybody have any experience with these barrels? Midway has them at a great price, but I know nothing about them. Thanks for any input.

I have one from the Liberty era, 1-8 5R 24", Grendel chamber and it isn't a short chamber. It was easy to assemble and dimensionally correct. Shoots about .75 moa with 123 factory AMAX. It's as accurate as my AA Overwatch upper. I am thinking about using it in a precision class.

I bought one a few months ago and I'm sending it back tomorrow. It shot well for about 15 shots and then the jams started. At first it would fail to eject and progressed to failure to extract. I cleaned the chamber, but it didn't help. I installed a heavier spring with an o-ring. That worked well for another 10 shots and then the failures started again. To me, it was a very cumbersome single shot. I will say that it was very accurate. I shot a .33" group at 200 yards. Unfortunately for me, I'm past 60 days so I can't get my money back from Midway. I can only get another barrel or store credit.

The reviews on Midway indicate that a lot of folks have had good results so it might work well for you. But if doesn't, don't waste a lot of time trying to get to work. Just send it back and get a refund.

I think I would look at your gas block for alignment, obstruction, or slippage.

My cousin has an 18" and does well with it. To my knowledge, he's never really tried shooting for groups though. He shoots 1000 yards with it every now and then, and has been able to make occasional hits at 1400

That was my first thought and I checked it more than once. On my first trip to the range after several rounds, I did notice it was loose. I heated the block up with a heat gun and tightened it down. I thought that would solve the problem. It didn't. The next time I shot it, I needed a cleaning rod to remove the shells. That's when I installed the heavier spring and o-ring. I also checked the gas block and tube again. Based on the powder marks around the gas port, it was centered. Plus, the bolt never failed to lock back on an empty mag. So the bolt was cycling fine. It just wouldn't extract the shell at all.

Just my opinion but it sounds more like a bolt or extractor problem rather than the barrel. The extractor could be out of spec causing extracting problems. Whats the brass look like after you get it out, any marks on the extractor groove from the extractor? It might be worth your while to get another bolt and give it a try, especially if the barrel shoots that well. Either way you would have a extra bolt if you ever needed it.

The ones I have seen have a .094" gas port on MLGS 18", which really needs to be tamed with adjustable gas, heavy spring, a heavy buffer, and often a combination of at least two of these things (heavy buffer + adj block).

As long as you go into one knowing that, you can tame the gun. I wouldn't let a .33" group at 200yds barrel leave my possession, and would just tame the gas. That's the most likely reason for your failure to extract issues. Cyclic rate is way too high on a MLGS 18" with .094" gas port. It shouldn't be over .076" really.

These sound like good barrels at a good price. I'm looking into buying another barrel and at the price these are hard to beat.. The 9/16x24 threads might be a deal breaker for me tho...

Brownell's sells a 6.5 Grendel barrel in 18" & 24" and use 5/8-24 thread on the muzzle. Brownell's has very good customer service. Brownell's won't state the source of their barrels but they are possibley Liberty.

No question on that. It is sold as a "Grendel II", which is only manufactured under that name by Satern / Liberty, as far as I know.

I bought the 16" AR Stoner and have had no issues whatsoever. I have been able to shoot consecutive 3/8" five shot groups at 100 yards with basic hand loads. Over 300 rounds so far and no issues with the supplied bolt.

I purchased an 18" medium AR stone barrel from Midway about 4-5 months ago when they were on a clearance and thus my love for the 6.5 Grendel started. I did a basic break in on it and it shot right around 1 MOA with Hornady boxed ammo, and occaisonally I would get a 3/4 inch 5 shot group. I think you would absolutely need to hand load if you want consistent sub MOA accuracy out of that barrel. I tinkered around with it for a while and then I sold it to fund a build with a Black Hole Weaponry barrel and I have been very happy with it. I dont have anything bad to say about the AR stoner barrel just that it is simple and effective, just not a high end barrel.
