Lee, did you find a BCG? What would I need to look for if you don't have one? I am a novice at this.

leopard6.5,
I'm trying to work out the cost breakdown on this: $650 Satern barrel/bolt combo, double-fluted... $90 AA upper $12 gas tube $80 Hogue Handguard (AA lists their composite handguard as standard on the UltraLight, which is a $140 item in mid-length.) $20 Side sling swivel $25 low-pro gas block $?? AA 3-prong flash hider Seems like your $1000 offer is reasonable...there is a lot in the barrel, due to the double-fluting and high-end cut-rifling.

cmdc- The best I could find so far is a plain Bolt Carrier that is not a complete BCG. I'll keep looking.
You could buy a complete Bolt Carrier Group which would include everything and just switch the bolt from the .223 bolt the BCG probably would come with. You should be able to get one for between $95.00 to $150.00 depending on the brand and where you find it. If you go with a Spikes Tactical NiBoron complete BCG they sell for $225.00. Hopefully this helps. Lee

LRRPF52- Thanks for your input, I try to be reasonable especially compared to what we paid for it.
BTW- Keep up your great posts on the forum. The amount of info you pass on to the newbie's here is unmeasurable and hopefully they listen and learn. Lee

Speaking of newbies, I am one. To ARs and the Grendel, that is. Does the Grendel take a standard BCG or is there one specifically for it? What do I order exactly?
Thanks, Charles

Hi Charles: The Grendel upper takes a standard BCG but I would make sure it's a M-16 version versus an AR-15 version as the AR-15 BCG's are lightened.
Using the M-16 version improves the dwell time and seems to lessen the incidents of problems. The AR's were originally designed with the M-16 version of BCG even in 5.56/.223. Once you have the complete BCG you just change out the bolt that is headspaced to the barrel. There are different versions of the M-16 BCG's( regular, chromed, Nickel Boron coated, etc.) but most people just use the regular standard BCG because they are cheaper unless they are going full auto or extremely high use. Lee,
I checked with my LGS and he said he wasn't sure he could get an M-16 BCG because the AFT frowned on it. He's going to check into it though. Any suggestions? Also, how would I go about getting the upper from you?
cmdc,
M16 BCG's are used almost by every manufacturer except Colt, if I remember correctly. They are not difficult to run down. Most box stores won't even know there is a difference. You can order the right BCG from Midway, Brownells, and multiple other places. Send LRRPF52 a PM and ask him where the best current deal is. He keeps good track of that kind of stuff. Here's a link with an actual ATF quote on M16 bolt carriers: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Daniel-De...209300.htm
You seek escape from pain. We seek the achievement of happiness. You exist for the sake of avoiding punishment. We exist for the sake of earning rewards. Threats will not make us function; fear is not our incentive. It is not death that we wish to avoid, but life that we wish to live. - John Galt

...M16 bolt carriers are not designed and inteded solely and exclusively for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun and are not any combination of parts from which a machinegun can be assembled. Further, an M16 bolt carrier is not a firearm as defined in the GCA or a machinegun as defined in the NFA. An M16 bolt carrier is simply a machinegun part and as such its domestic sale and possession is unregulated under the Federal firearms laws. It is not unlawful to utilize a M16 machinegun bolt carrier in a semiautomatic AR15 type rifle. Anyone who still believes M16 BCG's are no-no needs to realize that they are safer to use in an AR15, and there is nothing regulated with them. Light carriers can lead to case head separation with hotter loads or longer bullets, if the buffer, recoil spring, and adjustable gas block are not used to increase the lock time. Lightweight carriers definitely reduce lock time, which is not good, especially in carbines with 16" barrels and carbine-length gas systems (a gas system length that was originally designed for 10" barrels).

cmdc, a guy on gunbroker had m16 carriers for $60 recently. His mane is Jim Clemmons in Pennsylvania IIRC. These are real GI bolt carriers, not some off branded junk.
Edit: I dont think anybody would even know it's an M16 bolt carrier unless you told them. I know nobody here would know. Found his email addy: jimclementssr@verizon.net

G&R tactical had GI contract carriers for $50'ish. I have one and am very pleased. This is from a FL company (Daytona) who has the GI contract for replacement M-16 & M4 parts. (forgot the name)
