I had a premonition before this year's SHOT that I needed to focus on forgetting about myself, and looking for opportunities to help others.

There were a lot of interesting new developments at SHOT. What impressed me the most was the number of charities started by combat vets to help other vets recover from TBI's, and get transitioned back into civilian life. We are losing too many genuinely good people to suicide & TBI's, and there are a number of organizations helping out with that.

I ran into some friends who I haven't seen since 2000, who started Green Beret Foundation to help pay for things like hyperbaric chamber treatments, since the Army and VA won't cover them. This particular friend of mine couldn't speak for a year, and still has seizures, but the hyperbaric chamber helped him to be able to speak.

I will be working with these organizations to support these causes, because they are truly noble, and the right thing to do. So when you ask me what was new and exciting about SHOT Show this year, prepare to get a different answer from me than what you expected. Please take the time to watch the videos above, and visit the websites. I know Green Beret Foundation puts 92 cents of every dollar to the actual vets, unlike some of the other scammers out there. Green Beret Foundation was started by my good friend, who would probably not be able to speak if it wasn't for outside help in getting him the chamber treatments. He gave 21 years of his life at the cutting edge, so we will be doing everything possible to help out at least from my end.

Really cool. TBI is a big deal. One of my friends ended up being medically retired at age 25 because a vehicle he was riding was IED attacked twice in one day. One flipped the vehicle and resulted in unknown fractured vertebrae as well as cranial swelling that went undiagnosed for a year. Then once they had diagnosed him they retired himbecause of the fractures and TBI. Truly noble causes. TBI can get everyone in every branch and every occupation.

I walked by LabRadar's booth, but it was shut down time, and I was trying to find another booth I was supposed to meet up with.

Also, Mark LaRue announced that he is tooled up to make 6.5 Grendel and several others calibers in both the -15's and -10's.

LaRue Tactical: All tooled up for 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blackout, 7-08, 6.5 Creadmoar, 260 Remington, 338 Federal, 358 Win, 450-something or the other, etc.

338 Federal is next.

They had a .260 Rem at media day at the range.

I was with Precision Firearm's booth for media day helping people get on steel at 820yds. The difference between .308 Win. and 6.5 Creedmoor in the AR10's is night and day.

Also, major thumbs up to Lancer magazines in the AR10's. None of the Magpul Gen2 7.62 PMAGs worked in any of the guns. The Lancers were 100%.

I use Gen1 7.62 PMAGs in my .260 Rem AR10, and they work fine. I've seen a lot of complaints about the Gen2 mags across the industry in many of the 7.62 NATO/.308 rifles, so I'm not sure what the problem is. A lot of folks have to modify the follower so that it will hold the bolt back on last round as well. We couldn't even get them to feed.

Another +1000 on the Labradar. I want to wait a little while after it's out to be sure they get any bugs shaken out of the production run, but then I definitely want one.

Yea that left me scratching my head. I suspect their a little hesitant to offer the Grendel, because it will require a bolt different from the .223 and .308 they've developed for this gun.

Hopefully initial sells are so good, and the outcry for the Grendel is so much that they do develop that bolt.

The MDR is pretty heavy. I think Russ was just trying to answer as best as possible. I personally would put the 6.5 Grendel ahead of 7.62x39 and 6.8 SPC for obvious reasons. There are a lot of things to work out with that design. Getting the weight down without sacrificing their design goals is not an easy thing to do, when considering the requirement to be able to have an action that will handle both 7.62 NATO, and 5.56 NATO.

Bolt carrier travel is different on them. Weights and spring weights are different. It's very ambitious. They had the ejection system visible last year. This year, not so much. Too many thieves out there, and this is something innovative as far as ejection is concerned.

They intend to use the same action and recoil system for both the 5.56 and .308? I guess I just assumed that would be changed when changing calibers. I think keeping one of the 2 is innovative and doable. However, I suspect keeping both the same won't be worth the costs.

There will be a different gas system with each barrel. Not sure with the recoil systems, but 7.62 NATO rifles are always sprung heavier than 5.56 guns.
