.22 grendel test run

flatland1 Wrote:I need to make notes when I order bbl blanks so I can look up what I've got coming. Not long after ordering a 1-7tw .224" #4 sporter blank from Krieger, I got a notice from Bartlein that a 1-6.8tw .224" blank in their #3 sporter contour had shipped. To top it off, I'd found another #4 .224" 1-7tw blank on Krieger's inventory list & bought it. I wound up using the PTG 22 Grendel reamer on the Bartlein right after the go gauge finally arrived, and it turned out nicely.

I'd bought a Redding 6.5 Grendel Type S FL bushing die, and already having various bushings suitable for necking down to 6mm, just needed a few that would get me down to 22 cal, so called Grafs & got them coming. I didn't go small enough, since the smallest one (.254") left necks too large, and bullets just dropped in. I needed some other things from Brownells, so ordered .251, .250, & .249 dia bushings. That order arrived at the post office in town, but the guy working on Saturday put a yellow package slip notification in my box instead of putting my package out in one of the parcel lockers in the lobby & a key to the locker in my box - on a Saturday when they're only open until 11:45, and with today being Presidents Day & the PO being closed. No big deal I guess, but I could've been forming 6.5 Grendel Starline brass down to the final neck dia to work with the 22 Grendel bbl on the Mini action over the weekend while the weather was too crappy to do any shooting outdoors anyway. Small wonder that our postal service is losing money hand-over-fist...

The post office is also loosing money from me as they keep jerking me around on packages and what they will or wont deal with as far as making a label.

Went out yesterday, slapped my day scope on after being off for a couple months(off the gun, not out of the leupold 1 pc mount) from a bipod i put 4 shots under a dime, 2 shots in the same hole, 1 just tuching those and 1 just off those three, but still under a dime at 100 in 10 plus mile per hour wind and just laying off the side of the road with no bag.

I think even though the cfe is dirty as hell, i may stick with it and leave things alone.

I finally got around to loading some of the new Berger 85.5 LR Hybrids for my Howa Mini in 22 Grendel, which has a 24" Bartlein 1-6.8tw bbl. I've had pretty decent velocity & accuracy in a couple of 223AI rifles with Alliant PP2000MR, so tried a fairly stiff charge of it in new cases formed on Starline brass. Loaded 10rds each with Federal 205s & CCI 450s, then seated them to jump around .020", which fits into the plastic Howa 6.5 Grendel mag with a little room to spare. Conditions were actually very mild yesterday afternoon; it was 82*F with no more than 3mph of breeze from 7:00. Any less breeze than that, and I'd have issues with heat waves off the bbl interfering with what I can see through the scope. At any rate, the Fed 205 loads were fairly consistent, with ES of 24, SD of 8, and avg vel of 2946fps. Bolt lift was normal, and there were no pressure signs. The first couple of CCI 450 rounds gave stiff bolt lift that scuffed the caseheads, but no cratering of primers nor any ejector swipe. ES was 36, SD - 12, avg vel -2950fps. Oddly enough, the next 8rds after the first two had normal bolt lift, but whatever - I don't believe I'd run this load again; instead, would back it off about .3gr. Was shooting AR500 steel plates at 600yds, and wasn't all that impressed with the groups with either primer. Not saying they were 'all over the place', but I'm pretty sure the rifle will shoot better than what I saw. If nothing else, I at least got a good idea of the velocity this chambering is capable of....

Nice to see you got some load testing in.
I am waiting on some 2000mr as well as a Ruger 6.5 Grendel rifle which will wear a 8 twist 22 IMP barrel along with 6mm and 6.5 barrels with IMP chambers.

Have you compared 2000mr and CFE ?
2000mr has better temp stability and hopefully burns cleaner than CFE......

Es 350 it sounds like you are doing a multi barrel or switch barrel setup. That sounds like a great idea, please share what is going into your build to make the barrel swapping option viable.

Ruger has a barrel nut like a savage so will be pretty simple to switch barrels from one to another.

Main reason I ordered one is for my 22 IMP, since it already come with a 6.5 Grendel barrel , i will work up max loads in factory barrel then will rechamber to IMP chamber to see what advantage the IMP chamber offers .

Caleb Wrote:I have been busy since my last post shooting, working, hunting and life, but wanted to jump on here and report and ask.

I am shooting a bgw 20" 22 grendel(22bgw) with alexander brass, cci s.r. mag primer, cfe 223 30.6 grain under a 69 tmk at about 3300 fps and they are shooting great, as well as the tmk does a good job on coyotes.

I finally picked up a thermal and have been knocking these dogs down from 50 to 260 yards so far, i have stretched the 69 tmk to 550 is all during the day with a scope, not further, though i think it would still shoot just as well further.

Is there any substitutes for cfe223? This stuff is soo dirty, live the speed and not having issues with temp, but hate cleaning this.

Are you running an 8 twist from Bart?

I built up a 224 Grendel gas gun just before COVID lock up everything and just now got back ladder testing it. I ran 75gr ELD with CFE223 between 27gr and 28.8 gr with a 22" barrel and rifle+3" gas. The results ranged from 1.5moa at 27gr to under .5 at 28gr and 28.2gr. Then back to just over 1 moa at 28.8. I will go out next weekend and run some larger groups at 28.0-28.2gr and see how it holds up. These loads resulted in 2,900 fps. Not as fast as other people have posted, but with the grouping and good SD's I'm happy with it.

I plan to try the 95gr Sierra next. I built the upper intending to shoot those with RL16, but I wanted to start with a combination that others had tried before I went on to something completely new.

I got decent results with the 75gr ELD's using CFE223 up to 3,050 fps, but the best loads were all running right around 2,900 fps. I have the a set of 30 rounds made up with the 95 gr SMK with the same CFE223, and I hope to get back out this weekend to see how they perform. I noticed when Hornady made their new 6mm ARC they shortened the case by .080, and I'm beginning to think they might be on to something. All of my best loads are at about 85% fill, and as the bullets get heaver, the fill is going down. It seems I won't get enough barrel time (or pressure) to push up to slower powders like RL16 and keep burnout before the barrel exit. I am having some fun though, and the feeding has been flawless. This makes a really nice varmint rifle, and it seems like it will be ok a bit past 1,000 yds.

That is pretty good velocity for a 75 grain .224 bullet with a 20” barrel. A 55 grain polymer tipped bullet probably would get into lower 22-250 velocity area. Thanks for posting.

Not sure in your chamber and barrel length, but in my IMP chamber R16 works well with the 88's. H4350is another one that might work for you ...about the same as R16 but have heard from others it does not take up as much volume.

Pretty sure Hornady shortened the ARC so they could load the 108 gr bullets at mag length...kinda like the 450 Bushmaster, so it would work with the 250 FTX .....

I was curious to see how much velocity I would lose in 22" vs 27" shot some 88's loaded with 8208 ...27 is just shy of 2900 fps and 22 is just shy of 2800 which is same loss I saw with 53 gr bullets loaded with 8208 as well. IMP case can shoot 1 gr more 8208 than other data I saw other guys with normal 22 Grendel chambers.
There is a 224 Grendel FB page with lots of info on 22 Grendel. The moderator has done several QL workup with the heavier bullets/different barrel lengths.

Got my 20" 7tw barrel and JP bolt in. As soon as the +2" gas tube shows up, I can put everything together. Planning to run 65-77 grain bullets with either H4895 or 8208xbr.

I just gott find someone to turn this truck axle down to a more reasonable diameter. This thing needs to go to fat camp and shed a little weight.....kinda like the guy behind the trigger.

Did you get your rifle together yet?
Im sure you will love it!
My IMP version has become my favorite rifle to shoot! Just hammered a coyote this morn!
Thinking of calling it the 22 Hammer or 22DRT. LOL
