What magnification range are you using?

Put a 4-16 Arken on the 20"BCA barreled AR, a lot heavy but very effective. 4th shot out of this combo took out a prairie dog @ 525 yards.
The CZ American has a Vortex crossfire tacticle 3-12 on it. It works and is light but glass is iffy and clicks mushy

Respectfully, I think you forgot to say HOW elevation makes a difference exactly. You followed up that statement with a list of scopes you have on various rifles but no info one what you used. i.e. what worked best where.

The air is thinner and where we were shooting it was easy to see our steel targets or prairie dogs. The higher elevation at 1000 yards made seeing a target at 1000 yards easier with my 6.5-20 scope plus I could easily see my misses. At 1000 yards at 400’ ASL it is more difficult to see the same target because of the thicker air, humidity, mirage and vegetation. I personally like having higher magnification on my longer barrels and on my shorter rifles I like lower magnified optics with less bulk.

It really helps to use different scopes in your own area to find out what works best for you in your conditions.

That would the only difference, mine is a 0 MOA base. I have not got to shoot it yet. I have test loads loaded up now though, will be testing 123 SST, 120 Gold Dot, 108 Lapua and 90 TNT. I only have 230 of range to shoot on and hunting is max 200 yards.

I find I use 2-7 power scopes as much or more than anything else for most of my hunting which is inside 350 yards almost all the time. I like light handy accurate rifles for hunting with lower power for a large field of view and quick on target.

On my Longer range rigs have 2.5 to 15 scopes and that is good enough for 800 yards which is further than I would shoot at game but is fun and MOA targets are fine for me at 15X even after 5 eye surgeries.

I will say very good glass goes a long way with scopes IMO. I have a little Kahles 2-7 that at 7x no problem using 22 cal bullet holes as aiming points at 100 yards even with my eyes. The Bolt action Grendel wore a 2.5-15 30mm tube scope for a while but it now has a 3X9 Kahles that I am happy with to 500 yards. Part of the going to smaller scope is where I hunt mostly shots are less than 300 yards and often much less. Shots this year were only 10 to 80 yards.

Thanks guys! Even though they are pricey, Im going with NF because I had one of the old US made NSX 3.5-15 units and it was great. Clear glass and very rugged and reliable. I have looked at the NX8's, but a lot of folks are saying that the eye box is tight and the Reticle is hard to use under 6-8x. Not sure if that is true, but the ATACR seams more what I'm looking for. Also, maybe things have changed, but when I see huge power swings (like 4-32x) I get skeptical about how usable the range actually is. Thanks!

Thank for clarifying. Makes sense to me. Hope my 18x max scopes will do quite well. Haven't had a chance to use them for shooting yet; just been looking through them out in my backyard. From there I can place them on solid platforms to view the backyards etc of far off homes on a hillside. Some of these places are 2000+ yards away. When the weather conditions are perfect, I can see well enough to count the slats on patio chairs that far off. And make out the patterns of trellises on the sides of houses. I figure if I can do that at 2000 yds, hitting a big gong ought to quite doable. In theory. Depending on conditions and my dope, etc.
