I like the idea of a polygonal rifled 6.5mm barrel, but I need to work out how to get it out of the USA without unecessary cost.

The original PacNor was bought through an export licence that has expired so I need to do some digging on the status of replacement parts under the ITARs.

You could just have the smith cut your pipe to 20", re-crown, and drive-on.

That seems like the best solution considering the circumstances.

Minor update.

The barrel was cut back to 19.5in and is no better. Accuracy is around 4inches at 200m.

On the 'up' side, PacNor are making a barrel for me as we speak. I'm going to use this one on my 6.5/06 project and have ordered a Lilja #2 1:10 twist for the little Mauser.

Also on the 'up' side, the rifle now sits in a Basner HighTech Specialties stock. 19.5in #3 profile, Kahles 2-7x36 scope, Weaver bases and rings, full action and bottom metal in the Basner stock with a Pachmayer recoil pad.

I handled a few of the rem 798 and was disappointed in the craftsmanship under the bolt there was no work put into finish the fit was decent but there were tool marks as bad a peak war production mausers as compared to my m98/29 Mauser which is like glass throughout though it is a military action a not drilled for scope mounts, personally I think if I was doing a bolt action build I would go with something a like the cz if I wanted a mini action or a more conventional commercial action

Unfortunately the CZ is not available 'action only' and a 7.62x39 CZ rifle costs over $1k here in Australia - if you can find one as they are quite popular.

Other things not to like about the CZ are the bolt handle which forces a High scope mounting and the ugly bottom metal/magazine system which gets in the way of carrying a properly balanced rifle in the field. Love the little bolt on them though - true Mauser design.

The Sako Vixen would be the pick of the small actions in my opinion but again the cost of a doner here ia in the 12-1500NZ$ (960-1200 US$) that is if you could get one. They come on the market very seldom and are snapped upregardless of the price asked.
