LRRPF52 - You are correct about many conflicts having elements of massed forces, fires, maneuver and insurgency, but in my mind the political aspect combined with the readily available communications devices/systems/networks have made the insurgents activities influence the will of the policy makers directly. I think this is what really sets 4th generation warfare apart from traditional insurgencies of the past. As the technology becomes more available and more capable, you will see this aspect combined with historic insurgent tactics as the primary technique for enemies of powerful nation states.
