I also doubt 5.56 will be phased out any time soon. Military's have been in the business of killing for a LONG time. 303 british, 8mm mauser, 7.62x54r, 30-06. All of these are man killers and have proven their effectiveness on the battlefield. There is a simple explication behind the reason we went to 5.56. At the time it was to fight the Russians in a full scale conflict...a round that has a high maime % takes a lot more soldiers out of the fight than outright killing them. The ability to carry more ammo is an added bonus. If you want the higher kill % we have those rifles now, they have chambered in 7.62x51, .300win mag and .50BMG....are they the latest craze caliber? No but they get the job done.
