Well, to be honest, that's a photo I found on the internet. Mine is configured exactly like that, however.

Sadly, I don't have it in my hot little hands, yet. It seems that since I last bought a rifle (just before the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban), this state implemented a waiting period for long guns.

I dunno what "need" has to do with a hobby, but if she requires a reason, tell her it's for "stress relief."

I've never found another rifle that I enjoyed shooting as much as an M1 carbine. It's as light as a .22, but has enough kick and makes enough noise to be emotionally satisfying, while still being mild enough to shoot beaucoup rounds without being fatiguing. And if necessary, you can shoot it sans ear plugs, without feeling as if spikes are being driven into your eardrums, in contrast to more powerful rifles.

Ah...but I went beyond "hobby" to obsession long ago in her eyes, at least!

Truthfully, I look at all weapons as tools, and having two tools that do the same job equally well is fairly useless and a waste of resources. Each of my rifles fills a niche I identify and then try to correctly fill. Thus, I haven't yet identified a niche not already filled by something I have, that the .30 Carbine would fill.

I'm far too pragmatic to collect rifles like a lot of my friends do. If I don't shoot it regularly and with a purpose, I simply don't buy it, or I sell it.
