The main function of the cannelure in the SST is to mechanically lock the rear end of the lead in the jacket for better weight retention after rapid expansion, which gives you better chances of a pass-through, as well as bone defeating capabilities.
While historically serving as a crimping groove, the SST has both the cannelure and a deeper interlock ring towards the base. If the cannelure is buried at your maximum seating length, there is an issue.
