My first choice is whatever I can put my hands on the quickest (have hardware hidden throughout the house).
My preference is a 5.56 SBR suppressed with 55 grain V-max. I've shot countless critters with those bullets and I can tell you they are explosive.
If you are concerned about over-penetration, how about .17 Remington for a caliber? 25 grain bullet at 4000 fps is devastating on flesh but breaks up on contact with even a small twig.
