It's a stupid, pointless "law", that has zero effect on crime, while making things more difficult for good, upstanding citizens, not that I would ever label the unwashed masses of the horde with such a name.
I've never seen one marked as "pistol". I bought one that was "registered" as a pistol a few years ago when there was a panic over ATF buffoonery. That fad has since faded. More often than not, the stupid ATF rulings just cause more confusion:
Quote:Held further, a firearm, as defined by 26 U.S.C. 5845(a)(3) and (a)(4), is not made when parts in a kit that were originally designed to be configured as both a pistol and a rifle are assembled or re-assembled in a configuration not regulated under the NFA (e.g., as a pistol, or a rifle with a barrel of 16 inches or more in length).
Does this mean that the pistol and rifle parts must be in a kit?...or does it mean that a firearm that can be readily configured as a pistol or a rifle (e.g. AR-15) can go back and forth?

This is the ruling that alleviated the panic over "registering" pistol lowers. The concern was you couldn't make a pistol configured AR-15 and convert it into a rifle configured AR-15 without getting a license to manufacture (i.e. "make" a firearm).
Quote:Held further, a firearm, as defined by 26 U.S.C. 5845(a)(4), is made when a handgun or other weapon with an overall length of less than 26 inches, or a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length, is assembled or produced from a weapon originally assembled or produced only as a rifle. Such weapons must be registered and are subject to all requirements of the NFA.
More confusion. Does this mean an AR-15 bought as a complete rifle can't be converted to a pistol?...I don't think so. The AR-15 can be assembled or produced as a rifle or pistol.
