Montana. Did you say the SLR adjustable fits under the MI Gen 2 SS? There are very few gas blocks that will work under that handguard, which I learned the hard way.
The reason to avoid adjustables if not necessary is the torch-like environment that is being created in the gas port of the barrel by choking it above with the set screw, which focuses the gas in that point, leading to early erosion. This is where getting a port cut to the optimal dimensions comes into play for me.
I have also found that my adjustable gas block set screws have become welded in place with carbon and heat. I've tried thin penetrating oil, but no dice. Maybe I need to heat them up.
Yes, all of my SLR and Syrac gas blocks fit under my MI Gen 2 SS hand guards. The nice thing about an adjustable gas block is, if the gas port erodes you can still adjust it which is impossible with a standard gas block. I have not noticed any differences in barrel life with my adj gas blocks compared to the standard ones. The owner of SLR rifle works did say the adjustment screw can get carboned in if you don't move them every once in awhile. I have not had any problem with mine and I shoot a lot of rounds with my 5.56 rifles. I don't have the same high round count with my Grendels but they have been trouble free. If I have any stuck screws I heat the metal part up with a small torch,"butane for firearms" and put Kroil oil on it. The heat seems to speed up the Kroil oil penetration and has never failed me. I don't agree with your choke point theory because if you are using a load that worked with a standard gas port it would be the same. If a load is light and malfunctions all you are doing is opening the gas port to the optimum size. If the gas port is over sized like mine was the damage is already done but can be corrected with the adj gas block. My concern was with the spring in the adjustable gas blocks. Over heating any spring can not be good but I have been pleasantly surprised so far and have zero issues with them. Using the correct buffer is important but I like to be able to fine tune my loads with adj gas blocks.
