Well, maybe not straight up. At a slight angle from 90 degrees might be advisable, unless all present are wearing helmets.
Seriously, it works. I was with a silencer manufacturer once, when he was testing his .308 can on a sniper rifle. When fired horizontally downrange, the can didn't seem very quiet. To show that what we were hearing was the bullet's crack, he fired a round into the air. The only audible noise was the muted click! of the firing pin striking the primer!
