I finally have resolution to the problem. I opened the port to .098 but still had a few short strokes. I have enough rounds through it so that I could see the problem. My gas block was aligned properly from left to right, but the barrel profile and gas port do not line up along the longitudinal axis of the barrel. When the gas block is butted against the barrel profile it partially covers the gas port. Carbon under the gas block showed the problem. I moved the gas block slightly forward (.03") and then had to tune the gas down on the JPI adjustable gas block. No issues with 50 or sounds rounds through it. Accuracy is really good, so I'm glad I got it running. I'll hunt with it this year and then it goes to the paint booth. I had some .25" groups with Barnes TTSX this weekend, that should work on whitetail.
