There is way more than needing a machine shop. The engineering alone is a very limited capacity skill set in the marketplace. As far as manufacturing goes, there are significant aspects of cutting certain portions of the bolt that aren't a simple operation, like the firing pin channel. Then you have heat-treating, coating or surface treating, and QC testing compliance. It is very easy to screw up the heat-treating. Parkerizing improperly can ruin a part, as can nitrocarburizing. There are so many things that can go wrong outside of the machining alone, which is why bolts are a major hang-up.

That's not even taking the extractor into consideration, let alone correct springs and sub-components. There is nothing really simple and straightforward about manufacturing such a small part, that is required to articulate with another part, and withstand continuous explosive shock force pressures.

Multi-million dollar setup and years of experience to make a $65 part. Mass production and a large buyer's on a daily bases. That's why we were lucky getting his help.
