I should emphasise that these issues only concern portable weapons carried by dismounted infantry, because that's where the problems are being experienced. There is no need to change the whole army over to a new calibre overnight.

That's not an issue. Caliber changes have always taken years to fully implement, as the new caliber and weapons are phased in, and the old phased out. It would be no problem to reequip infantry units first while other troops remain armed with 5.56 weapons for a period of time.

The real question is whether the benefits of such a change would be sufficient to make it worthwhile. I submit that the dearth of hard data in regard to vital aspects of the proposed change makes a rational decision impossible.
