The consequences of allowing an artillery corporal/starving artist to be supreme chancellor of a nation are eternally painful for Germany, let alone the millions who lost their lives or had families destroyed by him.
I've also caught hint that the Germans were more interested in a smaller bore diameter for the Sturmgewehr, but the choice of 7.92mm was driven more by strategic logistics at the barrel-makers. They had as many barrel diameters to drill already and allocate to SMG's and pistols in 9mm, with shoulder-fired and belt-fed weapons taking 7.92mm. I would like to find more information about the other calibers they were considering for the Intermediate Cartridge.
