I think what's biting us in our collective asses is the encroaching stain of moral relativism and its unholy matrimony with our western reverence for freedom. Far too many of us see the word "religion" and instantly try to defend it as we would have our own religions defended. But the moral relativism blinds us to the fact that this religion we reflexively protect has, at its core, the drive to extinguish our own, and any others it encounters.
Too many of us cannot take the cognitive dissonance, however, and so we've created this cloak of "moderate Islam" to protect ourselves from the hard truth. And so, the battle, when it does finally come, will be lopsided at best, and probably not in our favors. But then, when did we ever expect a fair fight?
