Determined to Be the Anti-RKBA Party?: Gun control advocates have come
out swinging against the four Senate Democrats who voted last week
against a measure that would have expanded background checks on gun
purchases. They are looking to hold the Democrats accountable for what
they see as a betrayal on a key wedge issue for progressives. And
the only way that many in this camp think it will change is if there are
real electoral consequences. To that end, Progressive Change Campaign
Committee has launched a six-figure ad buy against each of the four
Democrats who voted against background checks Mark Pryor of Arkansas,
Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and Max Baucus of
Montana... And Mayors Against Illegal Guns the gun control Michael
Bloomberg-backed group announced this week that the group will also
launch an extended ad buy targeting Pryor, who is up for re-election in
2014... Ultimately, what might foil any attempt at retribution could be
the concern within the party that fighting a Democrat over gun issues
could put the party in worse shape with a worse candidate in the
general election... (The sad thing is that Going Out Peacefully will
probably blow the chance to position itself solidly as the pro-RKBA party.)

Meanwhile: Talks to revive gun control legislation are quietly under way
on Capitol Hill as a bipartisan group of senators seeks a way to bridge
the differences that led to last weeks collapse of the most serious
effort to overhaul the countrys gun laws in 20 years... Senators Joe
Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, and Patrick J. Toomey,
Republican of Pennsylvania, have been talking in recent days about how
they could persuade more senators to support their bill to expand
background checks for gun buyers, which drew backing from only four
Republicans last week... Meanwhile, a separate gun measure, an
anti-trafficking bill, is the subject of talks between Senator Kirsten
E. Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, and two Republican senators who
voted no on the background check bill. The Republicans, Senators Kelly
Ayotte of New Hampshire and Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, are discussing
ways they might support the bill, which would criminalize the shipping
or transfer of guns to someone who is barred from possessing a
firearm... (The latter are already illegal. The new legislation would
criminalize people who may be unaware of laws in other states, where the
firearms could eventually end up.)

Connecticut's two U.S. senators are expected to discuss plans to push
for gun control legislation following its recent Senate defeat. Sens.
Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy have scheduled a meeting Friday with
members of the media at the Legislative Office Building to talk about
"the path forward for federal gun violence legislation." The two
Democrats plan to discuss the ramifications the Senate's rejection of an
amendment expanding background checks for gun purchases, as well as
other proposals, earlier this month...

The Ongoing DHS Ammo Controversy: Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said
Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000
rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army, as he and other
lawmakers sharply questioned DHS officials on their "massive" bullet
buys. "It is entirely ... inexplicable why the Department of Homeland
Security needs so much ammunition," Chaffetz, R-Utah, said at a
hearing. The hearing itself was unusual, as questions about the
department's ammunition purchases until recently had bubbled largely
under the radar on blogs and in the occasional news article. But as
the Department of Homeland Security found itself publicly defending the
purchases, lawmakers gradually showed more interest in the
issue. Democratic Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., at the opening of the
hearing, ridiculed the concerns as "conspiracy theories" which have "no
place" in the committee room. But Republicans said the purchases raise
"serious" questions about waste and accountability... (A couple of years
ago, I took a young neighbor out for an introduction to the operation of
the AR-15, prior to his departure for USA Army basic training. Based on
a prior experience, I expected him to qualify as Expert, probably at
the top of his class. When his parents returned form his graduation, his
father told me that he had graduated with a Marksman medal. As soon as
he had hit enough targets to qualify, he had been stopped, to conserve

testified at a House hearing Thursday that the agencys bullet [sic]
stockpile is almost 250 million, and the procurement of ammunition has
remained constant in relation to the number of employees that carry
and use firearms.As of April 15, 2013, this amounted to DHS having
approximately 246,451,611 rounds in inventory, Nick Nayak said in

One More Convert: The View panel never shy away from the hot topics of
the day. But the debate on gun control become more than just a
discussion when Sherri Shepherd announced she wanted to arm herself on
Thursday. The 46 year-old announced that she wanted to buy a gun after
her burglar alarm went off at 1am that morning saying an intruder was
inside. The alarm and it's warning terrified Shepherd, her husband Lamar
Sally and their son Jeffery, despite the police arrived seven minutes
later to reassure the family it was simply a false alarm. Nonetheless,
the devout Christian who has taken a more conservative stance on a
number of recent hot-button political issues to make The View's
roundtable, declared they were buying a gun. 'Im trying to calm Jeffrey
down and all I had was this wicker basket,' Sherri said. 'I have
nothing, a bat, nothing. Were going to get a gun.' While Barbara
Walters tried to talk Shepherd out of the idea, fill-in co-host, country
music singer and licensed gun holder Gretchen Wilson supported the
former stand-up comedian, claiming she carried a .38 caliber pistol in
her purse and had a .45 caliber pistol beside her bed. Meanwhile, Whoopi
Goldberg encouraged Shepherd to go out and buy a bat... (Shepherd
probably has enough clout to navigate NYC's cumbersome permit system
more quickly than a common citizen. I hope that she does not follow
Uncle Joe Biden's advice to buy a double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun and
does not settle for the training that comes in the box with the gun.)
