As a LEO I had worked man hunts where we checked vehicles at a checkpoint looking for escapee ect. Normally we'd look into the passenger compartment and ask to look in the trunk. From people's response you could get a pretty good idea you weren't going to find anything. If a person refused I never would have pushed the issue unless I really believed the suspect was in the vehicle.
If the Officers had come to my house and said we want to look inside I would have said I have nothing to hide but your not coming in my house without a warrant. If they said they were checking any way with no warrant I'd try to get every officers name, department date and time. Even a video would be helpful as I think the Officers would be liable to be sued for violating a persons rights. I can't see how the Officers could claim hot pursuit and martial law would be a stretch IMHO.
