Gents, I've lived in Europe for 10 years. I've seen "social democracies" in action. We are nowhere near the European socialist states.

That being said, I'm not happy about quite a bit that has been "enacted" here of late...nor happy about FDR and LBJ for that matter. There has been some stonewalling, some questionable actions, but we still have a system with three branches of government that are independent and check each other. Don't think its true?...how about the recent defeat of background checks (and amendments). Could it be better?...obviously yes. But we are merely mortals and imperfect.

There have been questionable laws/acts throughout our history. Even some of the founding fathers enacted some dubious laws. Have we been drifting away from rugged individualism and self sufficiency? - yes.

However, I take great offense to characterizing an entire country as communist when we aren't even close. Go checkout the true communist states still left and see.

I might make fun of California from time to time and spell it with a "k", but that state certainly has a socialist bent being full of hollywood crack pots (and the like, particularly in the education realm) in the three major population centers. But you won't catch me spelling America with a "k", and I take quite a bit of umbrage with the spelling...apparently so do others (to include most vets that haven't lost their minds to conspiracy theories).
