I made this boonie specifically for the same reasons, as I'm of Scandinavian descent, and live at high altitude. I have gotten scorched one too many times in the mountains while shooting all day. In all my personal testing so far wearing several prototype models, I have not been burned.
My wife has an excellent cowboy-type hat she bought from her trip to New Zealand, so I know what you're talking about. I'm making the brims exceptionally wide on these boonie caps to give maximum sun protection, especially when the sun is at lower angles closer to the horizon, and the neck veil covers the rear area of the head/neck quite well. I actually received inspiration for that portion from Aussie SAS desert hats, which are much like the Rhodesian hats.
