I assume you are talking about Mexican immigration? Hispanics are, by nature, very conservative. They vote, however, with the party that seems to be least restrictive on movement across the border. The Republicans have screwed this issue up so badly that the Liberals have been able to paint them as the party that doesn't want the Mexicans here. In truth, small business owners, farmers, and even large business owners want and need that population. A huge percentage of our farm output is dependent upon it. Most Americans no longer want to actually do work for a living. We want to be part of the service industry and sit on our rears. We don't want to work the fields, or do labor type jobs.

Guess what, you can't pick greens for lettuce with a machine, its got to be done by hand, and no gringos want to do it! My son worked this past summer for his in laws in Southern California on a fresh greens farm. He was the ONLY gringo. The rest of the workers were all first generation Mexicans who, he says, were mostly high school graduates who came to work and send money so more family members could come work. They worked long hours in HOT conditions at minimum wage. Find a gringo willing to do that!

Cherry harvest in Washington State used to be a family harvest. Everyone would help out. Now you can't even get the gringos to drive the tractors that pull the loaded boxes, much less actually pick the fruit!

If the Republicans figured out this one issue, they could have the Hispanic vote in an instant.

Its simple, provide a way for guest workers to earn their citizenship. Work here for 7 consecutive years, or 8 out of 10, pay your taxes appropriately and have no criminal convictions, and you can become a citizen when you renounce you Mexican citizenship. OR, spend four years in the military and have no criminal convictions and you can become a citizen.

Any felony or gross misdemeanor conviction before citizenship automatically gets you double time, deported after you serve your time, permanently.

Anyone caught and convicted trafficking drugs while not being a citizen gets an automatic doubling of the prescribed prison sentence, THEN gets deported.

Agreed! However, until we stop the arterial bleeding that is our border we have got to stop worrying about putting a band aid on the scraped elbow that is the immigrants already here.

You're exactly right our economy needs their labor, but we have to close the border. The open border is directly contributing to a drug war in mexico where thousands have been SLAUGHTERED, not to mention the national security threat it presents. I'm honestly astounded we haven't been hit with a dirty bomb to date.

Once the borders closed I'm all for putting it all on the table for an open and honest debate on immigration reform, but not until then.
