Vegas used to be a quiet little Mormon town, until after the revolution in Cuba. The organized crime syndicates lost their drug smuggling, prostitution, racketeering, money-laundering hub in Havana, and were looking for a great new place to build casinos, strip clubs, and brothels, where hundreds of billions could be laundered.
They needed an area with cheap real estate, little government, within close proximity to a major metropolitan area, so they settled on Las Vegas. The government prefers casinos on US soil to offshore banks because the physical cash from the elicit trade stays on US soil, where it can be easily laundered through the casinos, as you can't prove how much money came through the casino floor. There are no receipts, and it's a cash-based business, perfect for laundering the real money volume from illegal activities.
Harry Reid's entire life revolves around organized crime, and you can even read about it in his autobiography, The Good Fight, which by its title, is a laugh when you start to read it. Here's an excerpt from his book that Harry Reid himself posted on Huffington post:
His high school history teacher was a big-time union and organized crime boss, with an interesting history that is far more elaborate and full of adventure than Harry Reid's ever will be. His name was Mike O'Callaghan. After he pulled strings to overturn Harry Reid's rejection by Georgetown University in Washington D.C., Harry was able to attend law school there and also landed a job as a Capitol City Police Officer to help put himself through school.
When he returned to Vegas with his Law Degree, O'Callaghan was now...the Governor of the State. He immediately appointed Harry Reid as the Lieutenant Governor, but then determined that a better position for him would be the Nevada Gaming Commissioner, where the crime syndicates create the image that they are regulating the casinos to ensure everything is "above ground".
If you have seen the movie, Casino, Reid's character is played by the guy with the cowboy hat who is giving DeNiro a hard time for firing his worthless nephew. The Mafia bosses referred to Harry Reid as one in their pocket named "Mr. Clean Face" because he operated under the profile of a Boy Scout, when he was really a paid stooge for organized crime. That Reid claims to have converted to Mormonism, while being at odds with all of its teachings, supports this profile even more. (pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, endless racist comments, etc.)
