Holing-up on your own requires a lot of people to maintain security. You have to factor in how many bodies it takes on each portion of a perimeter, with shift rotations. The further out you project a security perimeter, the more bodies you need. The more bodies you need, the more logistics you need. Even if you're smart and set-up a hexagonal perimeter, how far will you push out? A 300yd perimeter from your dwelling in a triangular shape will have each leg at no less than 300yds. If you build a bunker-trench complex that can handle all the dead space for each 300yd leg of the 6 sides of your perimeter, you will need 3 Infantry Companies + Engineers, and mortar pits, along with anti-tank weapons and air defense assets.
We're looking at 15 fighting positions per leg of the perimeter, occupied by no less than 2 soldiers per, for 30 soldiers per line, and you only have the option of running no less than 50% security at that point if all sectors are to be watched. Multiply that times 6 for just your perimeter, and you have 180 troops on the line in the defense. That doesn't account for administrative and support personnel at the built-up position (I'm assuming a cabin?) Take the extreme case that everyone is talking about with drones and Hellfires, and they can just fly in at night, drop a Hellfire on the cabin, and decide whether they want to run a story the next day about how some drug-growing extremists had an accidental explosion in their meth lab.
This is why the "holing-up" option doesn't provide a viable long-term solution for avoiding a tyrannical takeover, unless you rely entirely on stealth and long-term storage of logistics for a very small group. With modern satellite and aerial surveillance, ground-penetrating radar, and individual electronic tracking, it becomes less and less of a realistic option. You end up like Vicky Weaver and her son, with bullets in your head from an FBI HRT member who was told you are drug-running, weapons-trafficking extremists. The trigger-pullers don't have to know the truth, only what they are given in their missions order, and it will never be good.
We have to stay in our neighborhoods, be exemplary neighbors, and stick this out together. You need gardens, with distribution of crop types, water treatment back-up, water source plans, and a neighborhood watch. We're going to be forced into this model anyway when the unemployment goes from the current rate of 26%, to 35% and 50%+.
