DH...one thing you need to understand about General Officers (GO's)...they are ALL politicians. No one gets to be a GO without being an astute politician. Even reaching O-6 (full bird colonel) takes a basic level of political savvy.

There are a few GO's who are both politician and what I would call a "warrior". Gen Patton was a warrior. Gen Schwarzkopf was a warrior. Colin Powell was not. (yeah sure, some of them are decorated in combat, but that doesn't make them a "warrior" in my book).

My guess is that McChrystal will eventually enter the public political arena...as a democrat! Just a hunch.
