You shouldn't be allowed to run for office as a $enator like a Congressman, and the Founders knew this and established a totally different method for the States to appoint Senators to prevent them from being easily co-opted.
The 17th Amendment got rid of the original State-appointment system, claiming that political party deadlock prevented many States from having a Senator for extended periods due to in-fighting within the State.
It changed Senators from strict legislators who were to represent and protect their States from Federal intrusion, while being critical participants in international treaties, to commonly-elected uber Comgressman susceptible to the same whims and influence of a member of the House. The new system infuses more foreign and out-of-State influence on $senators, reducing their roles as powerful representatives of State rights.
