White house threatens Executive order on guns

Executive orders can only be based on existing legislation. The President cannot create new legislation. He could try to execute the expired "Assault Weapons Ban", but likely that would end up being defeated in the courts.

And as Newt pointed out, the House must approve any budget to carry an Executive Order. So the House could effectively block the Order by not funding it.

So all of our hopes still rest with the House - blocking legislation or not funding Obama's end runs. Please write your representatives.
