The question is a back-hand attack on our 2nd Amendment rights -- and, I would add, responsibilities.
I have seen the question asked about a lot of weapons -- from small arms to the the largest nuclear weapons, aircraft, and ships to include the folks that staff them.
The answer in the defense context is truly that you don't need them until you NEED them. If an individual or a country doesn't keep them on hand, they soon find that the oversight is costly. In between times of NEED, however, keeping them around can be a bit burdensome when a minority of loudmouths are chanting you don't need them, so get rid of them!
They are not interested in your rights, your safety, or your security.
