You forget that we have a lame duck President about to be sworn in for a second term. He will not have to worry about re-election. Even if he can't push something past the legislature he will use Executive privilege and institute extreme tax on ammo, parts, etc. I'm sure plan B has already been thought out if the emotional level of the country drops and people start thinking rationally again.
