The only sound they might hear is the safety coming off (if there is a safety) other than that it's lights out.
I personally don't own a pump. That was advice from a LEO to someone who doesn't want to keep a loaded gun in the house.
My home defense weapon is a Browning Light 12 with 00 buckshot. I only have to take the safety off. That and a few well placed pistolas!
