The mini14 is a lethal tool at the ranges of the Miami shooting. It's not particularly accurate past 100 yards, but at 20-30 yards its a scary weapon.
Having pistols vs a rifle, even one shooting the supposedly anemic .223, is not an even match.
The shotguns in the fight were not used to best advantage, certainly.
Dr W. French Andersons book is a good read about what happened, the results of each weapon, and what people did right, (and more importantly perhaps, what they did wrong!).
What I find interesting is that the 9mm was vilified for lack of penetration because of this shootout, so the FBI did testing and moved to the 10mm, which too many agents found difficult to shoot well and which had overpenetration issues, so they then moved to the .40 S&W, proclaiming that it had less chance of overpenetration than the 10mm. BUT...wait, wasn't the reason the FBI went to the 10mm was because the 9mm didn't penetrate well enough? Hmmm....our gubmint does some weird stuff!
