IMO, only psychological. Considering the thickness and width of most combatants' torsoes, there seems to be no physiological need to penetrate more than 30cm of gelatin.

However, if soldiers compare penetration to 60cm of 7.62 M80, they may perceive 50cm (or less) to be lacking in lethality.
