Tony's 6.5mm cartridge does not weigh twice as much as the complete M855 round. Here are some rough estimates I put together:
- 5.56 M855 – 7 x 30-rd mags = 210 rds @ 9.2 lbs
6.5 GPC ––- 7 x 25-rd mags = 175 rds @ 10.5 lbs
The above assumes steel magazines, since I think that's what the British L85 rifle uses. It also figures on 6.5 magazines of the same length as 5.56 mags. Note that total weight for 6.5 is only 14% greater, a mere 1.3 pounds. Also, while number of 6.5mm rounds is 17% less, the number of "stowed kills" may actually be greater than for 5.56mm.
