Problem is, aggressively cleaning a barrel CAN hurt it, and often does. People going to town on their barrel with solvents, patches, and brushes that scrape carbon along the chrystalline surface of the steel have worn out barrels faster than they would have if they had just shot over the copper deposit coating that fills in those crevices.
Barrels that need extra work to prevent fouling should have been squared away by the barrel maker by lapping, not left to the customer.
This is why I like Melonited barrels especially-they're too hard and smooth to foul.
