I live in North Carolina and we are finally having a night time hunting season on coyotes open up this year. I live a semi secluded area outside of Winston where NC Wildlife reintroduced wild turkey populations about 20 years ago. 13 years ago when I entered the service there wasn't a season on the turkeys but their population was doing really well. From 20 individuals to over 150 in just a few years. When I left the service and returned home, I noticed that the population hadn't really increased and couldn't, for the life of me, understand why when we still didn't even have a season for them yet. Now, the population is down to about 50 birds and every night, about 30 minutes after sundown the howls begin. Coyotes are a nuisance animal if their population isn't controlled as well.
Anyway, my real question here is what type of tactics do you deploy when hunting coyotes (day or night) as I don't have any in my arsenal for this type of hunting. We have dense woods and a lot of very thick areas for them to hide in. Any ideas from the dog slayers here?
