FWIW, this is how I envision using mine most of the time. Tripod is my little Slik "Sprint Mini II" tripod. Slik now makes a Sprint Mini III, which is basically the same. Comes with this really simple ball head that has a QD + shoe. Also comes in a convenient stuff sack. I'll probably use this setup in lieu of the supplied tripod, though there's no sense in not bringing that one along too, considering how small and stowable it is.
Anyone wanting something similar, just look in the "travel tripod" category.
The legs only (no the ball head) go down to about 6" and up to about 42".
