AR-15 started out with an optimized Rifle-Length Gas System for a 22” barrel:



During the development of the AR-15, the barrel length was shortened to 20” and standardized in the first production run of the Colt 601.

There was a 605 Carbine with RLGS and 15” barrel, and also a relatively-unknown MLGS carbine prototype that Reed Knight II has in his museum.

CLGS was made for the first Commando variant and the USAF Survival Carbine with 10” barrels.



The CLGS became most-used initially on the 10” barrel XM177 and later XM177E2 11.5” Commandos.

Colt used the CLGS on the SP-1 and Sporter II carbines, which had 16” barrels to comply with the arbitrary sodomite-concocted (Harold Knutson) NFA infringements, even though 16” CLGS makes zero sense for the gas system and plug dwell time.

Eagle Arms and Bushmaster copied the CLGS 16” barrel format in the civilian market, then other manufacturers followed suit. One of the main reasons was furniture. There were only carbine handguards that came from the Colt Commando variants, then poor copies of those made for the after-market.

Eagle Arms/ArmaLite Inc. used a MLGS for their AR-10B carbines in the 1990s, then AR-15 manufacturers started looking at that gas system and making MLGS 16” AR-15s. ArmaLite and Rock River Arms were notable early adopters of MLGS/16”.

18” barrels started becoming popular at one point in the 2000s, which were initially RLGS like the SPR. Some started using MLGS for 18” as well, but there is a lot of plug dwell time with an 18” MLGS.

This is where the Intermediate Length Gas System comes into play, which is more optimized for the barrel length and plug dwell length with an 18”.
