Well, update.
Yesterday Justice Coney Barrett declined to step in and grant a preliminary injunction.
Such a step, by stepping ("interlocutory") in before the case is fully gone through the courts, is very rare by SCOTUS by accounts I have read, so guess this should not be a complete surprise, although there was hope.
But it does mean that a normal appeal can now be done. So the entire case is not done yet.
