Mic the wire size, measure the length or count the number of coils, measure to OD, then just step down a little in wire size. Its that simple! Thats how we do it when tuning springer air rifles.
Another solution instead of trimming is to heat one coil at the end of the spring and collapse it. Try it, rinse and repeat as necessary. By not trimming it, you can reduce the strength and still maintain the original overall length when compressed.
